Description
Chinook Indian canoes were made from trees that drifted down the Columbia River. Some canoes were up to 50' in length and 4 to 5' in width.
The San Francisco Chronicle stated in June of 1884 that "the Chinook canoe was a model of naval architecture, as perfect in its kind as the best clipper ship ever launched from an American shipyard.
These reconstructed canoes grace the lawn of the historic Catholic church St Mary's of McGowen (Chinook) Washington at the mouth of the Columbia River.

Pamela, I especially appreciate the architectural shapes in this image. This was my selection today to post into the Mutual Promotion - Treasures Of The Past Discussion in the Vintage America Group for others to enjoy and perhaps cast some votes. v

Why do you think they call them braves? Now imagine going to sea ... and gathering heavy nets full of fish out in the waves. The extra weight would spook me too. Still love the shot!!!

I have seen them in the water Ric, very impressive but I probably would not choose one for sea travel either :-). Thank you for coming by and taking the time to comment, I appreciate it!

the colors are wonderful. fab sense of place. although they do look quite large i'd still be reluctant to go out to sea in one. (and i'm still in love with your snowy owl!)

Beautiful, Pamela. I love how the shapes of the canoes are echoed in the shapes of the church windows. Lovely composition! (v/f)

Oooh Miss Pamela! I really, really like this ... shapes, colors, the evidence of tool marks on the canoes. This has everything going for it! Instant fave and vote!
